We had our first appointment today and were there from 1:00 to 3:30pm. The first half hour was filling out paperwork. Then they had Steve and I watch a video – during which we both nearly fell asleep. It was geared toward teens and was about not drinking or doing drugs and eating healthy (duh).
Then we got some one-on-one time with the doctor and talked about symptoms, Dr. visits, etc. She asked me if I had the book “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” and I said no, but I really wanted that book! So she gave me one!! Along with a cute little white t-shirt for the baby
I was pretty excited.
On to the exam… I had a 4th year medical student do it and she said my cervix “looks pregnant” and asked if I wanted to see with a mirror. I said heck yea! I won’t go into detail, don’t worry, but it was pretty neat. Steve did not want to see, haha (actually, I didn’t give him the option), so instead he was starting to read our new book.
When the Dr. came back in, she commented on Steve reading the book already and he said, “I’m reading the part about sex.” Oh yes, that’s my hubby. Once the Dr. realized Steve was a jokester, she told him that I would need frequent back rubs
I then filled 5 tubes with blood for various tests and we were finalllllly done! We couldn’t have gotten out of there any faster to head to the Village Inn across the street – I was starving!! I was so nervous for this appointment, I only managed to eat some yogurt for breakfast.
Overall, everything looks great and healthy! The baby is right on track!
Next appointment is in 4 weeks…
Sorry to say the ultrasound isn’t until week 18 — 20 so we won’t have a picture or find out the sex for 3 more months!
They only do early ultrasounds if they think something is wrong or if you have no idea how old the baby is.
DUE DATE: December 18th, 2009
CURRENTLY: 6 weeks and 4 days along

Thanks for the update, Emily! So your appointment wasn’t too bad!
Nice you got a t-shirt and a book!!! I can’t wait to talk to you about the pregnant cervix!

Congrats on everything! I didn’t like all the paper work and questions they asked either. It seemed really redundant. I ended up having to answer everything again when I met my OB/GYN, too.

Hi Em & steve
next time you go to the doctor.…please ask them what symptoms grandparents will experience. I want to prepare in advance so I don’t think I’m dying.

Haha.. I think grandparents experience the urge to buy baby stuff! Lots of baby stuff
