Pregnancy Glucose Screening

glucose drinkI had my doctor’s appointment today, which included the dreaded glucose test. The drink was actually pretty good – especially because I had only eaten some crackers in the last 6 hours. It tasted like sugary, flat orange pop.

I was told to drink it in 5 minutes, “not too fast, not too slow.”

During the hour wait after finishing my drink, I had a normal check-up.

Fundus height: 26 cm. It’s up 2 cm from last month, which I thought was low (because an average of 1 cm/week is normal), but the doctor said the size was “perfect.”

Baby heartbeat: 135 beats/minute

Blood pressure: 92/52. Seems low, but that’s normal during pregnancy.

Here’s the shocker…
Weight: 132.4 –that’s up 8 POUNDS since a month ago! About 1 lb/wk is suggested, so I went ahead and doubled that. Haha.

Questions for the doctor:

Q: When will I have my next ultrasound (since I couldn’t get the pictures from my first one!)
A: I may not have another one, unless there’s a medical reason. BOO! I may just make up a medical reason to get those pictures. Hmm… suddenly the baby seems to not be moving much… ! ;)

Q: Can I take Tylenol Cold/PM? (I’ve been feeling stuffy and crappy the last couple of days)
A: Yep! Just don’t make it a regular thing (everyday)

Q: Do I need a Vitamin D supplement to help prevent the flu (because I’m not getting a flu shot)?
A: Nope. The prenatal vitamin is good enough, but it won’t hurt me if I decide to take some anyway.

Back to the glucose test…

After my hour was up, they took 3 blood samples. I believe only 1 was for the actual test… the others were to test for syphilis anddd something else? Anemia?

Gestational diabetes.jmpWhat’s the glucose test for?

It tests for gestational diabetes, a high blood sugar issue that some women get while pregnant. High levels based off this 1-hr test mean I’d have to go back for a 3-hr test (preceded by a 12-hr fast and a nasty drink – so I’ve heard). About 15 – 23% of women fail the first test and about 1 in 3 women who fail the first test also fail the second. It’s the most common health issue during pregnancy (all info. according to babycenter.com)

The drink has 50g of glucose and the idea is to see how efficiently your body processes the sugar in 1 hour. I hope I pass!!

My other half failed the first test but passed the second — the worst part of the second was being stuck at the OB for 3 hours whilst they ran the tests!

At least here the drink isn’t *too* bad, they have a range of flavors. Apparently it tastes like Dimetapp.

    (We’re 4 weeks ahead of you :P )

Yes I definitely don’t want to go back for a 3 hour test! At least your wife passed the 2nd time!!

Congrats to you and your wife and good luck! Thanks so much for visiting my site– I love comments from readers :)
