Ryan went swimming!

Today was disgustingly hot. 90 degrees and humid. I decided to try out Ryan’s new swimsuit and head to my mom’s house to swim in her “hot” tub. On the way over, I stopped at the store to get some swim diapers and a floaty for Ryan to sit in. I have a sling that I can wear in the water, but I thought the floaty would be fun for him to kick around in. He LOVED it! His little legs were kicking away and he was splashing all over, it was the cutest thing ever.

Look, he has HAIR!! We tried to make it like a baby mohawk, haha.

Women just keep quiet (About these); “Although you hide a secret, Hopeless and dear, or terrible to think on, Speak it, that I may send through the wide world For medicine.” — W.B. Yeats (1865 – 1939), Irish poet Responsibilities and Other Poems. 1916.(If Symptoms Persist)

ABOUT these things, women seem to have lost their tongue.

We’re not exposing domestic violence or extramarital affairs (though silence is common here, too; celebrities and game show hosts notwithstanding).

It’s about medical conditions women find shameful.

WebMD recently featured an article by Denise Mann which delved on the six most embarrassing medical problems that women would rather ignore or suffer in silence.

The sad consequence of this behavior is that treatment (or cure) is withheld because of the refusal of the patient to acknowledge, then present the case.

Exactly, what are these problems hidden by women on purpose?

1. Urine Leak. Leaking urine is never normal, unless you’re two years old. I guess the natural strategy to urinating too much is to drink less. However, this backfires because the bladder in fact becomes irritated. So, there you go — pun intended. The current statistic is that one out of three women under 35 has a leaky bladder. It is associated with growing older but of course, no one will admit she is getting old. Note that some medications for hypertension (diuretics) and too much caffeine (in coffee and cola drinks) will cause more urine to form. You must however still be evaluated for other reasons for leaking. go to website too much fiber

2. Gas. Who doesn’t get gas anyway? It’s just that while men fart the way they burp (loudly), women are expected to pass gas in silence and in stealth (!). Intestinal gas is a by-product of digestion so first check the diet. Are you a lover of beans, cruciferous vegetables, dairy products? Are you lactose-intolerant? Are you introducing too much fiber in your diet too quickly? You will get more gas than usual. If gas is associated with abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool, or heartburn, you may need to see the doctor.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS is frequent, loose bowel movements marked by abdominal pain or cramping and bloating. Since IBS is associated with emotional distress, patients cope by meditation, regular exercise, massage, and counseling. The goal is to reduce stress and save the gut from further aggravation. Let’s put it this way — we react to stress in many ways. Some get headaches, some spasms of the neck and shoulders. Some deal with stress by overeating and God forbid, overshopping. IBS patients face stress by getting diarrhea and cramping.

4. Excessive Sweating. Also known as hyperhidrosis, women are ashamed they can sweat as much as men. This is again a cultural lie (“men sweat, women glisten”) so women should not ignore overactive sweat glands of the palms, soles of the feet and underarms. Prescription antiperspirants may help. The good news is that Botox (botulinum toxin) is not for wrinkles only. It can be injected for excessive sweating.

5. Vaginal Odor. We don’t need a monologue for this. An odor is an odor and ruling out poor personal hygiene, it can be a sign of infection. See your Ob-Gyne and please, it is not always a yeast infection. So don’t self-medicate with all kinds of creams. go to web site too much fiber

6. Lack of Libido. Organic or physical causes include heart disease, diabetes, or drugs used for these. A lack of interest in sex may also be related to depression and anxiety from personal relationships and work. The solution is to look for physical causes of low libido before considering the emotional or social causes.

Surely, there are other hidden problems. But to simply find the resolve to visit the doctor and discuss any of the first six of embarrassing medical complaints is a good start. Don’t waste anymore time.

Billboard. The Philippine Academy of Pediatric Pulmonologists [PAPP] and the Asia Pacific Association of Pediatric Allergy, Respirology and Immunology [APAPARI] in coördination with the Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology [PSAI] will host the 2007 ASIAN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEDIATRIC RESPIRATORY MEDICINE from March 18 – 21, 2007 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza. Six foreign and twenty four Filipino experts will talk about relevant topics in pediatric pulmonolgy and allergy. PMA, PAFP and PPS CME units are provided. Official time to attend the convention for government physicians has been approved by the DoH.

Fact/Factoid. Cholesterol should be monitored at least five times a year beginning at the age of 35 in men and 45 in women.
