We’re buying a new camera… a nice one. We spent about $700 on Ryan’s newborn photos – and only got to choose THREE poses. They’re beautiful, of course, but we can’t do that again! Our price range for this camera is $600 – 700. I keep going back and forth between the Canon and the Nikon, so I’m asking all of you smart people.… Take the poll below and then PLEASE leave a comment on WHY you voted the way you did. Why the Canon or why the Nikon?
Also.. I read the Canon Rebel XSi was discontinued? That’s what I would have bought… I can still buy it, but is it smart to buy a discontinued camera?? HELP!
Background info: I’m a newbie at this… I mainly want awesome pictures of Ryan, nature, family, etc. And I want it here before BlogHer so I can take it with
But want to get the RIGHT ONE for that much money, kwim?
THANK YOU!
Generals grab 1st place in a squeaker
The Roanoke Times (Roanoke, VA) October 24, 2010 | Mark Berman As Bridgewater’s Will Davis prepared to kick a field goal that would have given his team the lead in the final minutes Saturday, Washington and Lee quarterback Charlie Westfal sat on the bench with his head down.
He couldn’t bear to watch.
Finally, he looked up and saw the 39-yard attempt sail wide left with 1:37 to go.
The Generals erupted in jubilation. They hung on for a 35 – 34 win and gained sole possession of first place in the ODAC.
Since mustering just 10 points in a Sept. 25 loss to Averett, W&L has won four in a row thanks to its ground game. The Generals ran for 438 yards Saturday.
W&L (5 – 2, 4 – 0), which won at Jopson Field for the first time since 1998, will claim an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs with a Nov. 6 win over Hampden-Sydney.
“After that Averett loss, I would’ve called you a liar if you were to tell me something like that was going to happen,” Westfal said.
A missed extra-point kick by Davis in the third quarter and his missed field-goal attempt were the difference in Saturday’s shootout.
“What I told the kids at the end of the game, all I could say was, ‘Wow!’ ” W&L coach Frank Miriello said. “[BC] just kept going up and down the field, just like our offense. It was a circus.” The Eagles (5 – 2, 2 – 2) had won nine of the previous 10 meetings in the series. web site how many plays did shakespeare write
They entered the game ranked seventh in Division III in run defense, having kept every opposing team below 100 yards rushing.
But the Eagles could not stop the Generals’ triple-option scheme. W&L entered the game ranked fifth in Division III in rushing offense.
“When you get something that’s unique, it’s tough to simulate during the week,” BC coach Mike Clark said. “That offense has turned them into a championship contender.” Slotback Harrison Hudson (Salem) hurt BC on the flank, rushing for a career-high 204 yards. Running back Luke Heinsohn hurt BC up the middle, rushing for 99 yards and three touchdowns.
“With him, … the defense has to respect the run game up the middle, so it opens some lanes up outside,” Hudson said.
Westfal ran for 62 yards and the go-ahead touchdown that put W&L up 35 – 34 with 8:31 to go. Slotback Brett Murray ran for 59 yards and a TD. in our site how many plays did shakespeare write
Miriello hugged all four players at game’s end.
No matter what happens in W&L’s game at Catholic next weekend, the Generals will go to the NCAA playoffs if they beat visiting Hampden-Sydney (7 – 0, 3 – 0) in W&L’s league finale on Nov. 6.
“It’s a little surreal,” Heinsohn said.
Hampden-Sydney was idle Saturday.
Darrin McKenzie, who ran for 146 yards and three TDs, scored on a 12-yard run to give BC a 34 – 28 lead with 2:06 left in the third quarter. Davis’ extra-point kick was wide right.
Heinsohn fumbled at the BC 20 early in the fourth quarter, but the Generals forced the Eagles to go three-and-out.
Westfal was just 3-of-6 through the air Saturday, but he had a crucial pass on the next drive. On third-and-9, he found Cody Smith for a 32-yard pass that moved W&L to the BC 14.
On third-and-4, Westfal ran 8 yards for the touchdown. Peter Alston’s extra-point kick gave W&L the 35 – 34 lead.
BC drove to the W&L 21. But McKenzie slipped and lost 1 yard, putting his team in a third-and-10 situation. Hagan Driskell threw an incomplete pass, and Davis came on to try the field goal.
“I don’t know that I managed that last drive well,” Clark said. “When it got to third-and-10, [offensive coördinator] Joe [Soltis] said, ‘How many plays do I got?’ I said, ‘You get [the first down] on this one.’ “As inept as our place-kicking and field-goal game has been, … to put [Davis] in that situation, I wasn’t being fair to him.
“That was a bad choice. … I should’ve told Joe ‘You got two downs. The [heck] with the kicker.’ ” As he walked off the field, W&L receiver Tate Davis triumphantly carried a shovel — the symbol of the team motto this season to “Dig deeper” in the fourth quarter.

You really can’t go wrong with either — go to a camera store, hold each one in your hands and try it out for awhile, and pick which one you feel most comfortable with. I personally have had a Canon XTi (older version of the XSi) for 2.5 years and I love it.

See this is a tough one. Both are excellent brands. Neither the Canon nor the Nikon is better than the other.
One thing you really want to consider is WHAT you will be using the camera for. Will you just be doing the point and shoot or will you be wanting to get more in depth with it and use the manual settings. You will have more control over the photos than if you are just pointing and shooting.
Another thing you want to consider is cost. Are you looking to spend a lot …or not a lot? I’m used to Canon so I would suggest a G10 or G11. They take EXCELLENT photos, but it’s not outrageously expensive.
Good luck!

I am a professional photographer and use a Canon 40D and 5D for work but I just bought myself a new Rebel XSi (that just came on Wednesday!) and I love it. After a lot of research that is what I believe is the best for my money.

My Dad swears by Nikon! You can’t really go wrong witheither Canon or Nikon, but all he has is Nikon, that’s what I have — and that’s how I picked my wedding photographers.

I really suggest the Cannon t2i, i’m saving up for it. It’s a fabulous DSLR but the video it does to is AMAZING. Like, it is being used by some indie film makers and commercial makers, and you can find it in the 700$s. I’m trying to sell my XTi so i can get it!

It’s simple. I’ve NEVER owned a Canon I didn’t like.

I love my Nikon D5000 — easy to use and the pictures come out of the camera looking great. Very little editing ever needed!

I have a basic Nikon CoolPix L100. I think it’s great for anyone who wants great looking pictures, but doesn’t have the time or patience for a million different settings to chose from. It takes really good video with audio as well. I can’t even whisper during a video without it picking it up. I love it and I think it only cost around $300.
