We’re a co-sleeping family. I don’t remember exactly when we moved Ryan out of our bed, but he was definitely over a year and it was because he just started moving (and kicking) too much that I felt neither of us were getting quality sleep. We remedied the fact that he would NOT sleep through the night in his crib by moving his crib into our room, at the foot of our bed. When he woke up, he could see us and we could talk to him–but we didn’t have to get out of bed. Perfect. In just a few nights, he was sleeping through the night. Eventually the crib moved back to his own room. Now he’s in a twin (BIG BOY!) bed and only occasionally wakes us up in the middle of the night.
We’re hoping the process doesn’t take as long with Rebecca. We don’t really want another 1.5 year old that isn’t sleeping through the night.
Rebecca is almost 7 months old and I think we’re going to move her to her crib. She has been very independent from day one. I mean, she nurses (super efficiently, I might add) and then literally pushes me away. In bed at night, she fusses until I actually move away from her. Girl needs her space!
So I’m hoping that means she’ll do well in her own bed, too. It’s in her room at the moment and we’ll try it out there first. Hopefully we don’t need to move it to our room, but we will if we need to. Any other tips???? She is still nursing during the night a couple times, but at this point I think that’s just habit because she knows I’m there. Would love to hear your stories of sleep transitions!
And speaking of cribs… can I get a hand in the air for each of you that HATES changing crib sheets?! GAH! It’s one of my most dreaded chores. Why? Because those mattresses are dang heavy. And they fit so snug against the crib, there’s no way to get a sheet on unless you pick the stinkin’ mattress up. (Can you tell I’m annoyed?) By the end of the ordeal, I’m sweating and cursing under my breath.
But not anymore. (Did that sound all infomercial-like? I tried.)
No, seriously. Did you know there is a 7-pound crib mattress? SEVEN! Where was Lullaby Earth when Ryan was a baby?! Oh, AND it has all the other features that are musts:
~no harmful chemicals or allergens (Greenguard Select certification)
~waterproof, even on the edges (it even meets food contact standards and can act as a dust mite & bed bug barrier)
~it’s recyclable!
~snug fit in the crib (meets the ASTM standards for crib mattresses)
~strong edge and side support
~made in the USA!
~2-stage dual firmness
Yea, that last point was new to me, too. What is dual firmness?? Just another awesome idea! One side of the mattress is flat and firm, which is recommended for newborns. The other side is a softer surface that’s great for growing toddlers.
I was so excited when this mattress arrived that my toddler was clearly a little jealous that it was for his little sister and not for him! Ooops. But that lucky kid got a new big boy bedroom set instead! So it’s all good 😉
Lucky Rebecca, her sheets will probably get changed a lot more often than I ever changed Ryan’s, haha. Just because I can handle this mattress! You mamas know what I’m talking about. I’m thrilled there is this alternative AND it’s a toxin-free, safe mattress made in the USA.
The Lullaby Earth 2-Stage mattress is affordable too, selling for $199. They also offer a mattress without the 2-stage dual firmness for $159. Check out their YouTube video of the mattress to see its features in action! Warning: cute baby overload!

I love that this free is toxin free.

Ha! Crib sleeping tips….. Not really sure I have any! Pretty much just waited until the child was ready to be moved to it! We co-sleep until it doesn’t work any more and then move them to the crib. But it’s really child led.

My favorite tip is the ~2-stage dual firmness. Makes it great for us parents, not to have to buy a different mattress when our babies become toddlers 🙂

I love that it’s lightweight!

I love that it is double sided for babies and toddlers.

Love love love the dual-sided mattresses. And for this matress, I love the dust mite & bed bug barrier factor.

Lullaby Earth is a revolutionary lightweight baby crib mattress that offers all the benefits you want in a crib mattress without any harmful chemicals or allergens.

This mattress looks great! We got a soy foam mattress for our son last year which is light weight but when it arrived I was not in love with the outer cover material this looks so much better!
[Reply]
i love how lightweight it is

I usually let my daughter fall asleep in our bed and when she is really sleeping well I move her to her crib.
[Reply]
We were/are a pat and “shush” family when it comes to crib sleeping, and we always started the night with her in the crib. we’ll see how it works out for fetus2.0..
[Reply]
I love that it has two stages. I always thought the reason my son wouldn’t sleep on his crib mattress was that it was too hard.

7 pounds!?! thats crazy. we just bought a new crib for baby #4 coming in january. our 12 month old is keeping his crib and mattress for now, so im in the market for one! this would be great

The fact that its so lightweight is great

My favorite feature is the dual firmness thing. Thats GREAT!
Sleeping tip- Sidecar a crib to the master bed. That has been WONDERFUL!
[Reply]
Best tip is to introduce a small blankie/lovey as a comfort object. We did this with our daughter around 3 months and it helps her go to sleep (or go back to sleep if she wakes during the night).
[Reply]
I love that it’s light-weight!!!!
[Reply]
Keep your kid in the crib as long as possible (age wise). 🙂

Ugh, I HATE changing the sheets on my Kbaby#1’s bed! We moved him into his own bed around 7 months because he was such a wild sleeper! Occasionally he comes back into the bed at night and he is 22 months. He just started sleeping through the night a little before our second was born. Kbaby#2 is 6 weeks and sleeps beside the bed. I noticed my first in the womb didn’t move move and is a horrible sleeper, while my second wouldn’t stop moving and only gets up once during the night at 6 weeks. Anyone notice that with their little ones?
[Reply]
I LOVE that it is toxic free! As for tips – we are a co-sleeping family too and I moved my kids to the crib around 7 months also. What I did was napped them in their cribs during the daytime for a few weeks before the night time switch. I would also lay them in their cribs during the daytime while I did laundry or straightened up their rooms or whatever… that way they were very comfortable before the big switch.

Oh man I love all of it, but dual stage firmness is intriguing and the waterproof feature is a MUST! I hate dealing with a pee soaked mattress! My tip for getting little one to sleep in the crib is the sound/white noise machine near by, it always soothes our little boy!

Before my boy was here I thought he would sleep in his crib, that did not happen. Most important to me was that he slept and that I wasn’t a walking zombie so cosleeping is what we do now. I think he’s ready to try out his crib but we realized that he finds it super uncomfortable. He wakes up immediately when I place him in there. I think this 2 sided mattress may be just what he needs to have a comfortable nights rest. I would live to win this and try it out. Thanks for the review!

I like that it is free of harmful chemicals and allergens
[Reply]
Keep the crib away from the changing table so when they get bigger they can’t climb from one to the other.
[Reply]
I love that it’s allergen free 🙂

I love that this this mattress is so light!!! A huge benefit too is that it has no chemicals, etc. which is also great, but I love how light it is!!

My favorite feature is how lightweight the mattress is. Will make for easy sheet changes.

I love how this is an affordable option for an organic mattress. A good sleep tip I have is to put you kid to bed with a nice blanket. My daughter was conditioned to learn that every time I handed her her lovie blanket she knew it was time to take a nap or go to bed. Now she can sleep in her crib or at the grandparents if she has that blanket.
[Reply]
I love that it is so lightweight and that there aren’t any toxic chemicals in it!
[Reply]
no sleeping tips from me… my son has been a mess with sleep 🙂 I do love the light weight of this mattress. I would definitely change sheets more often with this mattress around!
[Reply]
My biggest crib sleeping tip is to start early! Maybe not in their own room, own crib but I think bed-sharers have a hard time transitioning to the crib.
[Reply]
I love so many of the features of this mattress… but I think my favorite is the natural components!
[Reply]
I have no crib sleeping tips for you but can’t wait to read everyone’s answers for advice myself! I love the duel firmness feature of this mattress!

I love that it is non-toxic!

Is there anything better than a 7 pound mattress?! Changing the sheets is a workout right now and a lighter mattress would be AMAZING!!!!!

I like that the matress is so lite weight

Oh. My. Gosh. I love that crib canopy! Did you purchase it somewhere or make it yourself? Please let me know! 🙂
[Reply]
Where did you buy or how did you make the floral canopy?

I actually bought the canopy at a consignment sale and it was very simple – just the pink tulle on a white hoop (possibly from pottery barn?) but I’d imagine there are tutorials out there for buying tulle and using a hula hoop? Then I bought 2 strands of flowers from Michael’s and wrapped them around the hoop, secured with craft wire.
