Children’s Books: friendship tales from the farm

When people ask me for gift ideas I always say you can never go wrong with books! Our kids love story time and I think most kids do—whether they are listening to you read, exploring colorful illustrations on their own, or learning to read themselves. We recently received a wonderful new series about “friendship tales from the farm” and Burton the Scarecrow.

Ryan (our 4yo) likes to listen to any and all stories and he likes to pick up the books on his own and practice reading the words (or making up his own)! Rebecca (our 2yo) adores sitting on our laps and listening to us read and she especially likes to point out everything she sees in the pictures!

The Burton the Scarecrow series consists of 5 books written by educator and storyteller V.A. Boeholt. Each one helps to teach lessons about friendship, gratitude, problem-solving, being kind and giving, and overall what it means to be a friend. They’re sweet little stories with wonderfully bright and fun illustrations.

I love discovering new books for the kids and they love reading them (over and over. and over. and over. ha). Another reason I love these books is for the pages at the end. There are glossaries of terms we go over with the kids and there are pages of info for further education and fun!

Tips for readers and listeners (to help learn words and have fun), reading comprehension questions to dig a little deeper into the story and help your child remember main points, ways you can learn more online, more about the author and story, and (my favorite!), ideas for activities! Hands on things you can do related to the book—you can make a whole lesson out of one book or even a whole day by visiting a farm or farmer’s market! Do a craft, have a party, make food, do an act of kindness… the lessons go on!

These books and activity ideas would be great for a classroom or fun at home. My local MOMS club has a monthly “mommy & me book club” where we choose children’s books to read and have accompanying crafts and food. These are perfect with all the ideas already there for us.

Need to host a fundraiser? Do it with Boeholt Books! Check out their fundraising kit to see how you can sell and share these wonderful books with others while raising money for your organization. Easy and great for booster clubs and PTAs, scouting troops and reading clubs, schools and local libraries!
