Did you know September is National Preparedness Month? It’s always a good idea to have a plan in place for unexpected moments! I want our family to be prepared for emergencies—as prepared as we can be—so I partnered with Energizer to bring you these tips for preparing for emergencies!
1. Create a plan. Have a plan with your family for what to do before, during and after severe weather. Make sure to practice your plan so you are ready for any situation.
Only 36 percent of households have discussed a safety plan for weather related emergencies or power outages.*
2. Keep a portable light in every room: When power goes out, you don’t want to go digging through closets or drawers looking for that flashlight. Energizer portable lights ensure you’re ready for any situation:
- Weatheready®– Long lasting, practical solutions designed to keep you and your family safe
- Fusion Flashlights and Lanterns – Compact and versatile, Energizer® Light Fusion Technology products are compact, water resistant and provide impressively bright long lasting light
- Headlights – Energizer’s powerful LED headlights are lightweight and versatile – perfect for keeping your hands free during an emergency situation during a weather emergency
3. Designate a place to seek shelter. Designate a meeting place for your family to take shelter. A basement or the smallest, most-interior room on the lowest floor is safest for severe weather and tornadoes. In the event of a tropical storm or hurricane, evacuate the area if instructed by local authorities.
4. Make an emergency kit. Keep an emergency kit stocked with bottled water, canned food, copies of vital information, a first aid kit with prescriptions and an Energizer® Emergency Weather Station, which acts as a light, radio and charging station.
Only 38 percent of American households keep an emergency kit at home for severe weather.*
5. Check social media for updates. Oftentimes communications can be limited during severe weather. Social media can give you the most up-to-date information from local government agencies and news outlets.
6. Charge your devices. Make sure to charge your cell phone and ensure that your radio and flashlight have fresh batteries. Energizer® MAX® with Power Seal Technology are long-lasting and are no leaks guaranteed.
During a power outage, not having household lights make American households more uncomfortable than not being able to charge their cell phones or use the internet.*
7. Stock your vehicle. Don’t be caught unaware in your car during a severe weather situation. Make sure to have an emergency kit with the essentials in your vehicle.

What areas does your family need to work on? We have a meeting place, batteries, flashlights, and a weather station, but we need to work on stocking our vehicle and having more lights (headlamps and lanterns) available.

~Thanks to Energizer and The Motherhood for partnering with me on this discussion of National Preparedness Day!
This is a great idea. Even if you don’t live in a disaster prone area, you should still have a disaster plan prepared. You just never know!

I LOVE this post. I live in a southern Chicago suburb, and I never really thought about having a disaster plan. Then we had a big storm and the power was out for almost a week! I can tell you now – THAT was a major disaster for me.

This is a great post. I live in Rhode Island, so I make sure our family is ready for Hurricane season every year. They usually aren’t too bad where I am, but mother nature can be surly, so you have to be prepared!

We keep a supply of batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable food items on hand for emergencies. We haven’t had to use it, but that’s better than needing it and not having it!

I have an emergency kit, but sometimes I think that I am not prepared enough.

These are all such perfect ideas. I need to make sure our emergency kit is updated and ready for any emergency we may face.

We have an emergency plan. We REALLY need to go over it again as it’s been years since we practiced our plan with the boys.

Great tips. Having a plan and an emergency kit can make all the difference when you’re rushed in an emergency! We have a family plan, and plenty of flashlights with Energizer batteries!

I haven’t made an emergency kit in years – I really need to! Looks like Energizer has some great products for emergency situations!

Awesome post, and awesome tips.
I think as parents, we often worry SO much about the unpreventable scary stuff – like kidnappings, school shootings, etc. And forget that more kids are hurt by preventable stuff that we CAN control, like adding smoke dedectors, flashlights, teaching escape routes, etc. Great advice here!

Fantastic tips. Everyone needs to be prepared. I got most stuff we need I just need to get it all one one place.

What a great post. I know it sounds crazy but every time I see a movie about horrible things I think about the fact that we don’t have a plan. We totally need one.

This is a great post and very needed. We live in Texas, and you’ve got to be prepared at all times for hurricanes. Even inland, they can cause damage.

I don’t have a kit made, and I know I should. You just tend to think that you won’t need it – which is sooo wrong!! I know, i know – get on it already!

Great tips! I firmly believe in better safe then sorry when it comes to possible emergencies. Great list to prepare by!

The real question is what don;t we need to work on!? I would love to get one portable light source in each room. I have been thinking about that for a while now.
