Saved: breastfeeding donation for new moms

Cora’s Story is a non-profit organization that was created by Kristine and Ben, Cora’s parents, in her honor. Please visit Cora’s Story to learn more about the beautiful baby Cora and her parents and their fight to raise awareness. One thing this organization does is “Wear Pink for Cora Day.” She was born on Nov 30, 2009, so on the 30th of every month we celebrate her birth. We wear pink, we spread the word, we do random acts of kindness. Cora has taught me to be more patient, to love

Cora in the Classroom

You probably know by now (I hope) all about Cora. I think about her every day and write about her often. I give my students extra credit for participating on the 30th of each month in Wear Pink for Cora day. I wrote about the stories I heard and the pink I saw after August 30th. Well, another month has gone by and another of Cora’s birthdays has been celebrated. I collected the stories from my students again…….

Many wore pink. Many spread the word

Cora in the classroom

I started teaching this fall at our community college. The subject is human biology and I thought it was the perfect place to spread the word about CHD and Cora. I wrote a post a couple weeks ago about how I’m offering my students extra credit on the 30th of every month if they do 2 of these 3 things: 1) wear pink 2) tell someone about CHD and 3) do a random act of kindness.

On the 30th of August I only saw 2 of my 4 classes. If

Extra Credit for Cora

As I was planning my classes for this fall–intro to human biology–I had a great idea. Always thinking about Cora, I decided to get my students involved. I have about 140 students… if they all know about Cora and go tell their families and friends–actually, if they even only tell 1 person! Look at how many people are now that much more educated and aware.

It was WAY harder than I thought.

I wrote “C.H.D.” on the board. No one knew what it was. I explained that it means congenital heart defect, told them

Vlog: Cora’s Story gets $500!

Sooo… my camera broke. And I recorded this using a cheap, downloaded iPhone 3G app… the sound does not match up with the video. Sorry! But you get the point 😉

**EDIT 6/3/10** I forgot Smart Mom Jewelry as a sponsor and a 2nd winner for the Sephora products so scroll down to see those 2 winners. ALSO – the first TEN people that donated are getting Cora’s birth announcement/memorial card from her parents! Those are listed below as well!**

Ok, I’ve picked the winners from Cora’s fundraiser/giveaway! We had LOTS of great prizes and LOTS of wonderful people that donated. This is my favorite part of this “job.” We raised just a bit over our goal of $500, but paypal is STUPID and takes

Wear Pink For Cora: 3 days to go, PLEASE HELP

Remember Cora? How could you forget, right? She died when she was 5 days old while breastfeeding in her mama’s arms from an undetected CHD (congenital heart defect). CHD is the #1 birth defect, affecting 1 in 100 babies, yet it’s NOT routinely tested for at birth. And I bet most of you had never heard of it before either. Because of Cora, I got Ryan tested at the hospital when he was born–it’s a very quick, easy and cheap test using a pulse oximeter.

Cora’s parents, Ben and Kristine,
