One of my great friends from college (hey roomie!) recently moved to Australia as an interior designer ((jealous!!!)) and she sent me this article: Mums split over revival of breastfeeding each other’s babies. Feel free to click over and read the whole thing, but here’s the idea:
Women are using the internet to donate breast milk. Okay, I think we’re fairly familiar with that idea. Some people would do it, some people think it’s weird… to each their own. But this article spoke of two women that are actually nursing each other’s kids–yep, from the boob. Cross-feeding.
Moms are busy, moms are returning to work, and pressure is placed on them with the “breast is best” idea.
Again, personal preference, I don’t care if you think that’s weird or gross or whatever…. but get this: these moms were accused of child abuse. Someone threatened to call authorities and have their children taken away. A quote from one of the mama’s:

I was unable to breastfeed my own children for different reasons but i know for sure i would never have another persons child suck on my tit and i would never let my child suck on someone else’s tit. gross.

Huh. This is really interesting. I think it’s appalling that they’d be accused of child abuse. Would I do it??? I can’t honestly say. I’d be happy to nurse someone else’s baby for them if that’s what they wanted and they were comfortable with it… but I don’t know that I would want MY baby to be breastfed by anybody else. I guess I just look at the connection made between mom and baby – I remember the way M used to look at me while he was breastfeeding and I (greedily and selfishly) don’t want anyone else to have that time with MY baby. I absolutely don’t have a problem with other people doing it though – I think it would be a great way to relieve stress on a Mom who wants her baby EBF – I think about the nights where I stayed home from a movie, or a date with my husband, or whatever because M needed me with him… it would be a huge relief to be able to get out of the house for a night or a few hours without a nursling but still know they are getting the comfort of having a boob readily available.

THIS. Yes, this is exactly how I feel about it. I’d nurse another baby for a close friend/family… pretty sure I’d be okay with that. But not sure if I’d want Ryan to nurse from someone else–exactly what you said, mommy reasons. But it depends… on WHY he’d be needing to nurse from someone else. I’m unable to and he won’t take a bottle? And it’s really important to me he has breastmilk over formula? Yea, maybe. Hard to say without being in the situation. But like you said, I’m indifferent to others that may choose to do it. Actually, I think it’s pretty cool that they’re able to.

I think if both moms knew about it and were cool with it then it’s fine. I would be mad if someone bf my daughter without my permission since there are risks. But I think if both people are healthy and comfortable with it, then what’s the harm? More antibodies for baby! I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I wasn’t patient enough with “nursing” Brynlee because she was such a lazing nurser and some days I never left the chair and I had a 4-year-old crying over not having a mommy to play with him anymore, yadda yadda yadda. So consequently I’ve been exclusively pumping since Bryn was 8 weeks old and I have quite a supply in the freezer for “just in case” scenerios and honestly, I’m addicted to stocking up! I would LOVE to donate some extra milk to a milk bank and I wouldn’t hesitate giving Bryn someone else’s milk from a milk bank if I couldn’t provide for her. However, I don’t think I would want to NURSE another baby nor would I want Bryn nursed by another mama. For the same “mommy reasons” 🙂

I would never breastfeed another child and I would never let my child nurse from another mother. My main concern are those related to illness. What if my child contracted HIV from another mother just because I thought “breast was best?” It obviously wouldn’t be in that scenario. Secondly, I wouldn’t trust the health of another baby to nurse from me. The last thing I need is to contract thrush from a baby who isn’t even mine. God forbid I pass it on to my child.
