Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D is really important for your health and most people are deficient. You might know that you get Vitamin D naturally from some foods, but mainly from sunlight. The problem is if you don’t get enough time in the sunlight every day or if you’re always wearing sunscreen… now that it’s winter and getting really cold out, there are some days I don’t go outside at all!

“They” all push how important calcium is for strong bones–drink that milk! But did you know that your body can’t effectively absorb calcium without vitamin D? Here, I’ll let them explain:

And when you’re pregnant? Extra important.

If you aren’t getting enough vitamin D, then your baby isn’t getting enough vitamin D. This can cause huge issues for bone development and not just at birth or for newborns–this is something they can carry with them their whole lives, that can affect them as adults.

I’ve also read that pregnant women that are deficient in vitamin D are more likely to end up with a cesarean birth. AH! We all know I’m planning a VBAC and desperately do not want another c-section. I will do and try anything and everything to prevent another surgery and if that means taking some vitamin D supplements, you betcha. That’s the easiest of the things on my to-do list!

I went to Walmart to get my favorite brand of supplements–Nature Made. I also have their magnesium supplements and their prenatal vitamins! If you head to the pharmacy section of the store, the multivitamins are really easy to find. And from there everything is sorted alphabetically.

They have a lot of other brands, too. The lowest dose started at 400 IU (that’s 100% of your daily value) and they go up from there.. I know this Walmart also had 1000 IU, 2000 IU, and up to 5000 IU.

I went with the 400 IU for now, although depending on your source, many suggest you need much more than that during pregnancy… my prenatals also have 400 IU in them. You can check out my whole path to purchase at Walmart in my story on google+.

What supplements, if any, do you take during pregnancy? Have you ever taken vitamin D vitamins?
