Kids Camera Gift Idea: Playskool’s Showcam

I love taking photos, especially since having kids! I mean, everything they do is cute, right? πŸ˜‰ My kids have followed my love of photo taking, probably because they see me so often with my camera. Ryan (almost 4-years-old) is always trying to take my camera to snap some shots…. but it’s an $800 camera, sooo… eek! Sometimes I let him use my iPhone camera, but that’s still not a good idea! I knew I needed to get him a great kids camera. Playskool sent us their new Showcam to review!

Playskool’s Showcam: a kids camera

kids camera

The Showcam isΒ a digital camera (just like mom’s!) and it’s a projector! After you snap a picture you can customize it… just hit the silly button (yellow smiley face) and there are over 50 fun effects, props, and frames to choose from, silly sounds included in the process πŸ˜‰ Then you simply flip the big green switch on the side of the camera and it turns instantly into a projector that shows creations for all to see!

If you hit the orange shutter button while in projector mode it turns to a slideshow and there are 5 slideshow themes you can pick from, too, if you want. The Showcam is a great kids camera because the grips fit nicely in their little hands, it’s lightweight so it’s easy to hold, and it has nice, big and bright buttons. Ryan loves it because he gets to be just like mom and because of the instant gratification… he gets to see his photos on the large color screen on the back and then he can show off his work with the projector.

The Showcam holds about 1,000 photos (wow!) and, don’t worry, you won’t lose the photos when it’s time to make space… it has a USB port so you can connect it to your computer. You can save the photos, email them to friends, show them off on social media, or print them! Ryan’s going to be thrilled when he gets to see his artwork in print πŸ™‚

I will note that for photos to look good, you need to be in a well lit room and be close to the subject. To use the projector feature, you need to stand pretty close to the wall (a couple of feet away) and dim the room lights. Regardless, Ryan is thrilled to see his creations on the wall… or on the table… on my shirt… haha, anywhere he can aim it. And his favorite thing to do? Turn his little sister into a monster with the special effects πŸ˜‰

This kids camera comes in two different styles: the black with blue and green accents shown here and one that’s white with pink and purple accents. It needs 4 AA batteries that are not included and if you want to connect it to your computer you need a USB cord, too.

Suggested ages are 3 to 7 and suggested retail price is $59.99. You can find it at most major toy retailers nationwide and online at or Walmart (where it’s currently just $49.69). Pictures may not be super clear (compared to Mom’s camera, of course!), but for the price this is a really fun interactive toy and is sure to make your little one feel just like a photographer!
