My interview with Dr. Stork for Women’s Health Month

Last week I met with Dr. Stork (yes, from The Doctors and The Bachelor) to discuss Women’s Health Month and how oral health can affect overall health. What it basically comes down to is preventative care. So many complications can come from poor oral health, let’s just stop them before they start! Take care of those teeth!

Dr. Stork selfieA selfie with Dr. Stork, of course!

We met at Walgreens in Chicago for a Crest Pro-Health event. I got to sit down with Dr. Stork and ask him a few questions. Oral health? Of course I asked him about oil pulling! I’m sure many of my readers have tried it as we tend to the more natural side of things. So, what do you think? Has Dr. Travis Stork ever tried oil pulling?

Nope.

And he never will. Basically, his views on it are that it isn’t proven to work so why not do things we know do work? Let’s spend that 20 minutes doing something better for our health.

What is gingivitis and what are symptoms we need to watch for?

Did you know that one out of two adults has gingivitis and most don’t even know it?! This gum disease is an infection of the tissues around your teeth. It is reversible, but if left untreated it can advance to more serious disease that affects tissue and bone. Gingivitis comes from plaque build-up and the toxins it releases.

Check for red, inflamed, and bleeding gums. Dr. Stork made a great point—we bleed from anywhere else, like our eye, and we go to the doctor to check it out. But we bleed from our gums and we say “eh, no biggie.” It doesn’t make sense! Bleeding gums is a warning sign—pay attention.

How can we help prevent gingivitis and gum disease?

  • Brush your teeth regularly and get all hard-to-reach areas.
  • Avoid cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
  • Keep your immune system up by taking care of your body (including less stress)!
  • Gum disease can run in the family—pay extra attention if your family has a history of it.
  • Go to the dentist twice a year—they can catch signs of gingivitis before it gets too severe.
  • The Pro-Health Clinical Gum Protection Collection of toothpaste and floss is designed to help reverse gingivitis in as little as 2 weeks, while providing comprehensive oral health benefits: Crest Pro-Health Clinical Gum Protection Toothpaste, Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Toothbrush, Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse (love this stuff!), Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss (one of Dr. Stork’s favorites!).

And because of my physiology background and love of the human body, I HAD to ask him, as an ER doctor, what is his “favorite” thing to treat? I mean, he sees it all in an ER, right? Not at all related to oral health, but I had to know 😉

The people. Could he have had a more perfect answer? He said that it’s inspiring to see so many people having their worst day ever and be so calm about it. He told me he once had a man come in who accidentally chopped off his fingers, his wife had them in a bag, and he walked in holding a rag on his hand saying, “Well, doc, bit of a problem here.” Puts your problems into perspective.

For Women’s Health Month, Walgreens is offering Crest Pro Health (paste, brush, rinse, and floss) on sale for $2.99 each PLUS when you buy 2 you get 1 free. Valid from 5/18-5/24.

Women are an important part of society so the health of the woman also has great importance. Gum diseases are most common in many countries and it is difficult to prevent gum diseases. I want to thanks for the ways that you mention in the article to prevent gum diseases. Neogen

I’m someone who suffers until she can’t take it before I take any OTC medicine. And even then, I alway read the bottle, even if I’ve read it a million times before. I almost always give my daughter a tiny bit less than the amount she’s allowed for a dose of medicine. I guess I’m just overly cautious when it comes to medication! Great information though!RECEPT

Health is a great blessing of God. All the work and no success should be fatal for health. If you want to remain healthy you should need a special diet. The tips that you mention in the article about the health I really like it. One of the best is to drink plenty of water. Thanks for the great information.blue light glasses

I love reading and hearing about everyone’s traditions. We always had Thanksgiving linner–2 through 4 o’clock. This year, we’re doing Thanksgiving at my parents’ house at 12 noon! They don’t mess around. In the evening, we’ll be doing snacks (bacon-wrapped little Smokies, veggies, and cheese and crackers), dessert (pumpkin pie, dark chocolate raspberry cheesecake brownies, and I think someone is making pumpkin creme brulee), and wine, beer, and hard cider with Kory’s side.diabetes hospital in Chennai
