Five hours in the car with my brother… were we fighting or playing games? I can’t even remember that part of it. We probably sat mostly in silence, headphones on our ears, mine blasting some Aerosmith.
We finally get out and stretch. The air is clean and crisp with the deep scent of pine. My dad opens up the cabin and my brother and I run from room to room, throwing our stuff–just like home! A trip to the local grocery store to stock the kitchen and to the bait shop to stock the boat and we’re set for the week.
We spend the days on the water, fishing for hours, or wandering through the woods, exploring and looking for deer.
When I was younger, my dad always took my brother and I “up north” at least once a year. We drove into town to call my mom from the pay phone (the WHAT?!), my dad taught us how to fish and how to clean them, each visit we bought a wooden duck to add to our collection, and we enjoyed the rain storms in the woods… together.
That smell of Wisconsin pine trees will always bring me back to our “Up North” memories. Now that we have kids of our own, we’ve been able to continue the tradition and bring them up there, too!
