Clean Eating Tips for Beginners

As many of you know, my husband and I recently overhauled the ingredients in our kitchen. I went all in and threw away most processed and refined foods. Out with all the added sugar! We aim for fresh foods, organic meats and produce, less dairy, and the occasional complex carbs like whole grains. It has been wonderful! We have more energy, have both lost weight, and just feel better all around.

Before we started this lifestyle, I thought it would be difficult. I hate to cook and I don’t meal plan very well. I had no idea what to do a fridge full of veggies. With just a little bit of reading and lots of recipe searches, I have discovered so much that makes this SO EASY. Basically, if I have a fridge full of vegetables and a freezer of meat, I can make anything, anytime.

I do try to menu plan for the upcoming week before I go grocery shopping. I do better when I have a plan. But if I happen to shop while I’m out, without a list, I just stock up on alllllll the veggies.

Clean Eating Tips for Beginners

My trips through the grocery store have never been faster—I hit the produce area hard, grab some meats, and a quick run through dairy for almond milk and eggs. I skip nearly the entire middle of the store (except when I need to restock things like quinoa and spices).

Ohhh, look how pretty. I love shopping at Jewel-Osco because of all the pre-chopped fruits and vegetables. I will definitely pay a little more for those because it saves me so much time in the kitchen.

If you’re new to clean eating—or are simply looking for a healthier lifestyle—here are some clean eating tips that really helped when I started…

  • Avoid processed and refined foods as much as possible. Skip the white flour, sugar, breads, and pastas.
  • Look for the good, complex carbs—whole grain pastas, brown rice, quinoa. For bread, when we eat it, we go for the Ezekiel sprouted grain bread.
  • Fats are okay, if you’re eating the healthy ones! No added sugars. You need essential fatty acids… coconut oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil… My favorite healthy fat is my avocado!
  • Check ingredient lists if you are buying things that aren’t fresh—there shouldn’t be many. No artificial colors, preservatives, additives, trans-fats, etc.
  • Create a plan—when we first started, I wouldn’t have made it far without meal planning. Search for recipes if you aren’t sure what to make, just google “clean eating recipes” or “whole 30 recipes” for a start. Once I learned how to cook with certain veggies and had a stack of great recipes, I could just pull from those in a pinch.
  • Make lists—when we shop at Jewel-Osco I use their MyMixx app to make my shopping list. I can see the weekly ad with what’s on sale and add from there, “clip” coupons, and even email my list.
  • Try to save. Organic and fresh can be more expensive, but we now just view it as “the price of food,” because it is what it is. If you buy in bulk and watch the sales and coupons, you can stock up when things go on sale instead of having to buy at full price just because you’re out of stock. The MyMixx app is GREAT for watching items like this. And yes, they often do have sales on fresh ingredients and meats!
  • Basics: lots of veggies, whole grains, a healthy oil, eggs (my fall-back… so easy!), and quinoa (seriously, use it as your rice, “bread” your chicken with it, put it in a salad… packed with protein and super tasty). Cauliflower is another magic must-have—”rice” it, blend it to make a sauce, create a “crust” with it… YUM!

Having a grocery store app like MyMixx for Jewel-Osco is a lifesaver and makes my trip much easier. Flip through it even while you’re in the store shopping or in the parking lot before you go in… you add to your list or clip coupons with the touch of a button.

Search by section: produce, meat & seafood, dairy… and filter your coupons, too. Type in your app phone number at checkout and the coupons are automatically applied and those items are cleared from your app shopping list. You can download the MyMixx app and read more about it here.
